The Optical Society of America (OSA) approved ‘Manipal University OSA Student chapter’ as an official student chapter in October, 2016 and the inauguration of the chapter was done by the honourable Vice Chancellor, Dr. H Vinod Bhat at the School of Life Sciences, Manipal University, Manipal on February 13, 2017. OSA (Optical Society of America), is a leading professional association, founded in 1916 in USA and is actively involved in promoting Optics for research in Basic and Applied Sciences including Biomedical Sciences, Bioengineering, Biophotonics etc. (http://www.osa.org/en-us/home/). The contribution of light/optics in our day to day life as well as in enhancing the quality of life is many. To name a few, the contribution is recognized starting from fiber optics, telecommunications, medical imaging and in cancer research. Using the science of light, several critical technologies have been developed and are used in medicine, defense, security, telecommunications etc. The OSA provides quality information on optics and about light-matter interactions through its publications, conducted meetings, and membership programs. OSA introduces Optics and Photonics-benefits through Student Services (http://www.osa.org/en-us/membership_education/student_services/). There are more than 400 OSA Student Chapters all over the world in various Institutions/Universities. In India, there are a total of 35 OSA Student Chapters existing and three of them are in Karnataka including ours. Under this chapter, students can develop technical knowledge, leadership experience and lasting relationships with the peers and mentors. The OSA offers many unique chapter benefits to achieve the desired goal of the society and take care of its financial requirements.
During the inauguration of the chapter, Dr. K. Satyamoorthy, director of School of Life Sciences, Dr. N. Udupa, director research (health sciences), Dr. Satish Rao BS, associate director (research) SLS, Dr. Padmalatha S. Rai, associate director (academics) SLS, Dr. K. K. Mahato, Head, Department of Biophysics, SLS, Dr. Nirmal Mazumder (Faculty coordinator), Department of Biophysics, SLS and other faculty, staff and student members of SLS were grace occasion.
