Every year OSA provides opportunities to 7-8 student chapters all over the globe to host IONS (International OSA Network of Students) which is a conference held to bring the scientific community together. This year, our chapter members got to attend the IONS taking place in Kochi from the 11th to the 14th of September.Organised by the International School of Photonics and co-hosted by the Indian Institute of Science,Bangalore it mainly dealt with the concepts of quantum optics and Photonics.
Over the course of 4 days,we got to experience much more than we could’ve asked for. Each day was markedly different with proficient scientific names addressing an eager crowd with all the enthusiasm.Dr.M.Mitchell from the institute of Photonics Sciences, Barcelona stole the show on Day 1 with his talk on Bell Tests and Quantum Foundations. The speakers didn’t shy away from narrating their first hand experiences from the scientific world ,shattering stereotypes while efficiently answering all the questions that we’ve always had in our minds.
Day 2 had Dr.Premkumar from Northwestern University talking about all optical Switching for Photonics quantum networks. Later on he even spoke to some of our members about his early days in the lab which was quite inspiring. This was followed by a segment were chapter representatives showcased their respective chapter activities to the audience. Ms. Nada Yusuf, presented on behalf of the Manipal Chapter. In the evening, there was s cultural night held followed by a grand buffet dinner. Our chapter too joined in one of the singing performances.
On Day 3, a Social Day trip was organised to the famous Athirapally Waterfalls for the attendees to interact with each other. The day was eventful with a little road trip, some trek, local food, music and dance.
The last day was marked by a Valedictory Function. Following that, we took the opportunity to explore the places around.
All in all, this was an experience which made all of us realise the importance of being an OSA member but most importantly of being a science enthusiast.
