IONS Scandinavia was held from 5th June to 9th June at Technical University of Denmark ( DTU) , Lyngby , Denmark. The event kicked off with a social gathering and registration on 5th June with some barbecue.
The next conference began by a little warm welcome by a member of the IONS committee followed by a talk by the director at DTU regarding different departments of DTU and the conference.. The Optical Society of America was introduced by Terence Rooney who is the manager at OSA. With that done the first plenary speaker of the day Ursula Gibson presented her research on Optical Materials and Novel core optical fibres. Following her the Phd students presented their research. Four talks were held in each session , each speaker being given 15 minutes to talk followed by questions by the audience. After the talk the delightful lunch awaited us at the DTU food court. Following the lunch the next talk was given by Nir Rotenberg, about Coherent quantum nanophotonics: chiral and nonlinear interactions with quantum dots. This was followed by two sessions of student talks with a little coffee break in the middle. The final major talk of the day was given by Jes Broeng, a phd and an entrepreneur he was the man who brought crystal fibers into the market. Finally , the sponsors got a chance to introduce their company and give a brief lay out of their products and services. Amidst these talks Katrina Svanberg also introduced the international society of optics and photonics. After the talks finally the much awaited Pizza and Beers were served and the day came to a close.
The second day started with an introduction to EPS young minds was introduced by Giorgio Nocerino who talked about the benefits of joining the group. This was followed by a talk by Dr. Siddharth Ramachandran. His talk was about Fibre optics and communication along with touching upon the nonlinear interactions. His talk was followed a tea break and then came the talks by phd students. Then lunch was served after which Katarina Svanberg who talked about Biological Applications of Laser spectroscopy and her experience while she was working in China to treat patients. Following her talk was the tea break after which another session of student talk happened. After all the last talk of the day by Sune Svanberg was delivered. Who talked about the environmental and medical applications of laser spectroscopy. After the wonderful talk by Dr. Svanberg the day’s talks came to an end. Finally , the student presented their posters to the audience after which everyone left for the conference dinner at Baest Restaurant in the heart of the copenhagen city.
The following day everyone gathered at the Oticon Salem to catch the bus to Lund. Here the plenary speaker Anne L’Huillier talked about High-Harmonic Generation and Attosecond Science. Following her talk the phd students went on with their talks. Following that was lunch at the food court at the university. And then the much awaited visit to the MAX 4 lab facility was conducted. The labs were as follows, Laser Lab, MAX PEEM , Balder and NanoMAX, COsaxs and BioMAX and at last FemtoMAX. I had the pleasure of visiting FemtoMAX and BioMAX. The BioMAX lab was still under construction with the main aim to be able to determine the protein folding structure and its molecular structure without destroying or damaging the protein.
Following the lab visit , a round table discussion on IONS and how it was made possible happened. Then followed a little game on an app called Kahoot !!. The game was a little survey where questions regarding Gender Equality and various other parameters were put up. This was then followed by a Panel Discussion on “ Equality in Optics” . The discussion touched upon the sensitive topic of gender equality in physics. After the discussion we had our dinner at Lund university. It was before the meals the award for the best talk and best poster were awarded. Finally we left for Copenhagen as the conference came to an end.
The following day we visited the world’s oldest functional amusement park, Dyrehavsbakken. And then left for the Canal Tours in the heart of copenhagen. The elegant canals of copenhagen gave us a grand tour of the city. After the tour everyone headed their own ways with memories to cherish for a lifetime as the trip to an end.
