The Manipal Optical Society of America (OSA) Student Chapter as a part of social outreach programme aims to spread knowledge on optics, optical instruments and optical phenomenon to the students of various underprivileged schools who are not fortunate enough to know all of them. Students are fascinated to see micro-organisms using microscopes and hence, curious about the micro-world and how optics facilitates us into it. Microscopes, however, are a sensitive and costly instrument and it is not possible to take microscopes every time during the outreach visits. Thus, for educating the budding scientists of future and for a quicker way of point-of-care diagnosis for microbial infections, the Manipal OSA Student Chapter applied to the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India for “Foldscopes“
A Foldscope is an ultra-affordable, paper optical microscope that one can assemble themselves. Designed to be extremely portable, durable, and to give optical quality similar to conventional research microscopes (magnification of 140X and 2 micron resolution), Foldscope brings hands-on microscopy to places victimized by price-barrier before Education.
We are delighted that our request has been approved by the authorities under category C. The chapter shall utilize it wisely.
