An International conference on fiber optics and photonics- ‘Photonics’ was held at IIT Delhi, from 12th Decemeber’18 to 15th December’18. It was a premier conference in the emerging areas of Photonics, Science and Technology. This conference was 14th in the series of biennial international conferences and presently acknowledged as one of the most important conferences in this area.

The 4 days of the conference had a well divided schedule that began with registrations in the morning on the first day. The remaining time had talks and lectures from well known, honorable professors and researchers from across the globe. Each day began with a common plenary session which was followed by talks on various topics. The delegates could attend any of them based on their interest areas.

The conference had David Neil Payne as the keynote speaker and a number of other speakers for respective parallel sessions.

A Cultural evening was held on the first day and had a mesmerizing dance by Dr. Uma Sharma (Padmabhushan winner) and troupe. From telling about the history of kathak by Dr. Uma to the display of basic steps of kathak with the drums syllables made the audience spellbound. It was then followed by the conference dinner.

Meals of all the three times along with tea and coffee breaks were well managed for all the days of the conference. The conference banquet dinner was a lavish buffet held on the third day of conference in India Habitat Center.

Two students from School of Life Sciences, MAHE-

Aadhyaa Setya (2nd year, B.Sc. Biotechnology) and Soumyabrata Banik ( 3rd year, B.Sc. Biotechnology) had the opportunity to witness this conference and learn about new fascinating topics that relate to photonics.

Talks on Biophotonics, Optical Imaging, Optical tomography, Bio-imaging and various other areas were held, involving speakers from across the world.

The two students had the chance to interact with various delegates present and it was a matter of pride to have many of them interested in the IONS’2019 being organized by SOLS, MAHE from 11th January’19 to 14th January’19.

All the 4 days were a lot of fun and interactive to attend. Arrangements at the conference in all aspects including management, talks, accommodation, food, distributed kits deserve a praise. All the conference participants were given kits that included bags, a schedule book, notepad and pens, as well as innovative customized magnets.

Our students were glad enough to attend such a huge conference and gain knowledge by being a part of it.

Soumyabrata presented a scientific poster on ‘Portable Optical Microscopy on smartphones using BLIPS lens’ during the poster presentation slot which had poster presenters from various parts of the world.
